Notes on moving well

Three things that actually help a sore lower back

Most lower back pain settles with time and the right kind of movement. Here are three things that help, and one that does not.

  1. Keep moving, gently. Short walks and normal activity usually help more than rest. Lie down if you need to, but not for days.
  2. Change position often. Sitting or standing in one place for an hour makes most backs worse. Stand up, walk to the door, sit down again.
  3. Warmth can ease muscle tightness. A warm cloth or a warm shower is a comfortable place to start.

What does not help

Bed rest for days. It weakens the muscles that support your back and can make the pain last longer.

How to lift

Keep the load close to your body, bend your knees and hips, and use your legs to stand up. Avoid twisting while you lift.

When to get checked

If the pain is still strong after a week or two, if it runs down a leg, or if it is stopping you from working or sleeping, an assessment is worth having.
