Notes on moving well
Why your neck hurts after a long day on the road
If you ride or drive for a living, your neck is doing a hard job. Here is why it complains, and what helps.
Why
Your neck muscles work all day to hold your head steady against the wind and the bumps. Gripping handlebars lifts the shoulders. Helmets add weight. By evening the muscles are tired and tight.
What helps
- Drop your shoulders every time you stop.
- Do five chin tucks.
- Turn your head slowly left and right, a little at a time.
- Check that your seat and handlebars allow your shoulders to stay relaxed.
- Drink water. Dehydration makes muscles feel tighter.
When to get checked
A neck ache that comes most evenings, headaches at the base of the skull, or a stiff neck that stops you checking over your shoulder.
